The trips
What kind of holidays does Musette Travel run?
Private cycling holidays in Portugal for your own group of six riders or more, guided or self-guided, in the West Algarve, on the Costa Vicentina and in the Alentejo. Four to five riding days, boutique hotels, a route built for your group. Private trips have no fixed departures. For riders without a group we run a few open weeks a year, six to sixteen riders. The founder, Jerom Pannier, has built cycling trips in this corner of Portugal since 2010.
What is the difference between guided and self-guided?
Guided: a Musette guide and a support van with driver ride with you every day, one guide for every eight riders; lunches, dinners and ride snacks are included. Self-guided: you ride our GPS routes at your own pace with a printed roadbook, after a personal briefing and bike delivery at your first hotel; a 24/7 phone line sends a vehicle if something goes wrong. Breakfast is included in both; lunches and dinners only in guided.
Which trip should we choose?
The Wild West if you want a journey: hotel to hotel from the cork oaks of the Alentejo down the Atlantic coast to Cabo de São Vicente and Sagres. Lagos Base Camp if you want to unpack once: one hotel in Lagos and five rides from the door, including the climb to Fóia, the highest point in the Algarve. The Montado is our new Alentejo trip around Évora.
Can you cycle the Rota Vicentina?
Yes and no. The Rota Vicentina's two famous walking routes, the Fishermen's Trail and the Historical Way, are for walkers only. The Rota Vicentina also has a separate cycling network of more than 1,000 km of MTB and gravel trails. Our routes use quiet roads and gravel tracks through the same landscape, and we choose the surface for your group. (Source: rotavicentina.com)
Can we make the trip shorter or longer?
Four riding days and five nights on The Wild West, five riding days and six nights at Lagos Base Camp. A rest day can go anywhere, and an extra night in Lagos is easy. Tell us your dates; we design around them.
When can we travel on Lagos Base Camp?
Planned from May 2027, when the Lagos Marina Hotel, Curio Collection by Hilton is due to open. We take bookings now.

Price and booking
How much does a Musette cycling holiday cost?
Per person, sharing a twin room, for a private group of eight, mid season, without bike rental (2027):
| TRIP | GUIDED | SELF-GUIDED |
|---|---|---|
| The Wild West · 5 nights, 4 ride days | €2,350 | €1,185 |
| Lagos Base Camp · 6 nights, 5 ride days | €2,240 | €1,140 |
| The Montado · 6 nights, 5 ride days | Quoted for your group. | Guided only for now |
Mid season, groups of eight, estimate. Price per person, sharing a twin room, for a private group of eight. Low season costs less, July and August cost more. Smaller groups and other dates are calculated for your group and confirmed in writing within 48 hours. Subject to 2027 hotel confirmation. Bike rental is invoiced separately with 23% VAT; the package price includes VAT.
Why does it cost this much?
Because of what is inside it: hotels with character chosen one by one, one guide for every eight riders with a support van, every lunch and dinner on guided trips, your luggage moved for you, a mechanic on call, and the founder on the phone. And because of what is not: no fixed departures on private trips, no forty-rider pelotons. We run your group only; for riders without a group there are a few open weeks a year, six to sixteen riders. It costs more to work this way; it is the only way we know how to do it.
What makes the price go up or down?
Two things: the size of your group and the month. A smaller group pays more per person, because the guide and the van are yours regardless. April and October cost more than February and November because the hotels do. Single rooms (+€120 per night, so €600 on The Wild West and €720 on Lagos Base Camp), bike rental and a Lisbon arrival instead of Faro add to it. You get an exact figure within 48 hours of asking.
What is included, and what is not?
Guided: 5 or 6 nights with breakfast, depending on the trip, guide and support van every riding day, lunches, dinners and ride snacks, luggage transfers on The Wild West and The Montado, group transfer from and to the airport, mechanic on call, a Musette jersey.
Self-guided: 5 or 6 nights with breakfast, depending on the trip, GPS routes and roadbook, briefing and bike delivery, luggage transfers on The Wild West, airport transfers, dinner transfers where the restaurant isn't walkable, 24/7 support line with vehicle call-out.
Not included in either: bike rental, wine and drinks, flights, travel and cancellation insurance (strongly recommended), single-room supplement.

Can the price change after we book?
The price in your written confirmation is the price you pay. Portuguese package-travel law allows a later increase only if the contract provides for it, only for fuel, taxes or exchange rates, and only with at least 20 days' notice, and above 8% you may cancel without charge (Decreto-Lei 17/2018, art. 23–24). Our contract has no price-revision clause, so none of that applies to you.
How do we book, and how does payment work?
Tell us your dates, group size and the trip. We reply within 48 hours with a written proposal. To confirm, two payments: 40% at booking, the balance 60 days before departure. One person can pay for the whole group.
Is our money protected?
Yes. Musette Travel is operated by Algarve Cycling Hub, Lda, a Portuguese travel agency registered with Turismo de Portugal (RNAVT 12588). Every registered agency in Portugal contributes to the Travel and Tourism Guarantee Fund (FGVT), managed by Turismo de Portugal, which refunds travellers if an agency fails to provide what they paid for, including through insolvency. (Decreto-Lei 17/2018, art. 37–39.) Repatriation and assistance during the trip are our own responsibility, covered by our liability insurance.
What is your cancellation policy?
Charges per person, counted from the day we receive your written cancellation: 90 days or more before departure, 40% (the deposit); 89 to 60 days, 60%; 59 to 30 days, 80%; 29 days or less, 100%. We refund the rest within 14 days. A replacement rider is always free from our side. If unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances at the destination affect the trip, a wildfire closing the route, for example, you can cancel without charge and are refunded within 14 days (Decreto-Lei 17/2018, art. 25). Travel and cancellation insurance is strongly recommended.
What if one of our group has to drop out?
You can transfer their place to someone else, always free of our charges; only extra costs that hotels or suppliers actually charge for the change are passed on (Decreto-Lei 17/2018, art. 22). If nobody takes the place, the cancellation charges apply to that person. The price for everyone else does not change.

Riding
How fit do we need to be?
These are proper sporting rides with real climbing, not a walk in the park. That said, every day can be shortened, on guided trips the van is there, and an e-bike is the answer for a lighter week or a niggling injury. A fair self-test: can you ride 60 km two days in a row and still enjoy dinner?
What if our group has very different levels?
That is the normal case. The guide rides with the group, the van follows, and every day has a shorter option. The simplest fix is an e-bike for whoever wants one. On our trips it is a decision guests thank us for.
Road, gravel, MTB or e-bike: which should I choose?
Road for long views on quiet tarmac. Gravel for the tracks between the cork oaks and the cliffs. MTB for trails on the Wild West and around Lagos. E-bike if you want to ride with friends who are stronger than you. Same hotels, different route. See The Bikes.
Is there much traffic?
Our routes avoid the N120 and N268, the two national roads along this coast. We cross them now and then, and where a short stretch is unavoidable we ride it with care, with the guide in front and the van behind. Stay alert on any public road; that is true here as anywhere.

What about the wind?
From June to September the prevailing wind on this coast is from the north and north-west, the nortada, and it usually builds in the afternoon; mornings are often calm. The Wild West runs north to south, so on those days it is mostly behind you. In spring and autumn the wind is more variable. When to come
When is the best time to cycle in the West Algarve and Alentejo?
February to June and September to November. The coast is mild all year: in Sagres the average maximum is 16 °C in January and 22 °C in May. Inland, the Alentejo gets hot in summer. Évora averages 30.6 °C in July, with about 14 days a year above 35 °C, which is why we don't publish July and August departures.
MONTH BY MONTH
| MONTH | COAST, DAY | INLAND, DAY | SEA | RAIN DAYS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| February | 16 °C | 14 °C | 16 °C | 6 / 7 |
| March | 18 °C | 18 °C | 16 °C | 6 / 5 |
| April | 19 °C | 19 °C | 17 °C | 6 / 8 |
| May | 22 °C | 22 °C | 18 °C | 4 / 6 |
| June | 24 °C | 27 °C | 20 °C | 1 / 2 |
| July · August | 25–26 °C | 30.6 °C | 20–21 °C | 0 / 1 |
| September | 25 °C | 27 °C | 21 °C | 3 / 4 |
| October | 22 °C | 22 °C | 21 °C | 7 / 9 |
| November | 19 °C | 17 °C | 19 °C | 8 / 8 |
| December · January | 16–17 °C | 13–14 °C | 16–17 °C | 8 / 8 |
Can we come in winter?
Yes. February and November are our low season and the quietest months on the roads, with Sagres averaging 16–19 °C by day. Expect some rain days (six to eight a month). December and January are on request, like July and August.
Can we come in July or August?
On request. The coast stays pleasant (Sagres averages 25 °C), but inland days get hot and we start early.
What happens if it rains?
We ride earlier, shorter or on another route, and the van is there. On a genuinely bad day we swap the ride for something worth doing off the bike.

Bikes
Do we need to bring our own bikes?
No. Our bikes come from our own fleet, road, gravel, MTB and e-bikes, current KTM and Scott models, maintained in our own workshop and set up to your measurements before you land. Rental for five riding days: gravel €213 · road €318 · e-gravel €343 · MTB €198–313 · e-MTB €298. See The Bikes.
Can I bring my own bike?
Yes. Tell us when you book; transport with the group costs €45 per bike, and we have a workstand and a mechanic on the trip.
What is included with a rental bike?
Helmet, pedals set up to your system, a pump and a puncture pack. A GPS unit on request. Bring your own saddle, pedals or shoes if you prefer.
Are e-bikes allowed on every route?
Yes. We run e-gravel bikes (KTM Macina Gravelator SX 10) and full-suspension e-MTBs; there is no e-road bike in the fleet. On guided trips a charger travels in the van. On self-guided trips you charge at the hotel; the longest day is 88.6 km, so ask us about the right mode.
What happens if a bike breaks?
On guided trips: One guide for every eight riders and a support van with driver and mechanic. Spare parts in the van; a replacement bike comes from the hub when needed. On self-guided trips you call our 24/7 line and a vehicle comes to you.

Every bike is built and checked in our own workshop before it meets you.

Getting here
Which airport should we fly to, Faro or Lisbon?
Faro, for Lagos Base Camp and The Wild West: Faro to Lagos is about an hour (86 km), Faro to Santiago do Cacém, where The Wild West starts, about 2 hours. Lisbon is possible on request at extra cost (Lisbon to Santiago do Cacém about 1 h 30, 140 km). The Montado starts and ends in Lisbon. (Driving times: Rome2rio.)
Are airport transfers included?
Yes. One group transfer at the start and one at the end, from and to Faro (Lisbon for The Montado). Lisbon for the other trips costs more and is priced in your proposal. If your flights don't line up, we arrange separate transfers at cost.
Do I need a visa or ETIAS?
Portugal is in the Schengen area. EU citizens need an ID card. UK, US and other visa-free visitors are registered by the EU Entry/Exit System (live since April 2026); ETIAS travel authorisation (€20) is due to start in the last quarter of 2026. Check your government's travel advice before you fly. (Source: European Commission, April 2026.)

On the trip
What are the hotels like?
Hotels with character, chosen one by one: a farmhouse estate in the cork oaks, a clifftop house at the end of Europe, see the holiday pages. Twin rooms as standard; single rooms +€120 per night.
Can you cater for dietary needs?
Yes: vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, allergies. Tell us when you book; we choose the restaurants with it in mind.
Can a non-cycling partner come?
Yes. They travel with the group, sleep in the same hotels and join the dinners. They pay their own price for the hotel, the transfers and the meals, not for a bike or guiding. There is no separate programme for one person, but plenty of local tips. If a larger part of your group is not riding, say so when you inquire and we put something together.
Can children come?
We look at the rider, not the birth certificate. In practice that means 14 to 16, depending on size, and from about 12 on an e-bike. Bike handling is what matters, not age.
Do we need travel insurance?
Strongly recommended: cycling-specific cover including cancellation, medical treatment and repatriation. EU visitors should also bring an EHIC; UK visitors a GHIC. Neither replaces insurance.
Should we tip?
Never expected. If you want to, you decide the amount; nothing is added to the bill.

Trust
What happens when something goes wrong?
Something will. A headwind on day three, a puncture at the worst moment, a kitchen that closes early. No honest operator can promise a perfect week, and we won't. We promise that when it happens, we have already started fixing it: another restaurant, a shorter route, a phone that answers. In an emergency, dial 112; then call us; we come as fast as the road allows.
Who are we riding with?
With our own team: guides who ride these roads every week, Gregor in the workshop, and Jerom, who designs every trip. See About.
What do other guests say?
4.9 out of 5 from 317 Google reviews (October 2026) and 5.0 from 89 on Tripadvisor (May 2026) for our Musette base in Almádena.
Is Musette Travel the same as musette.bike?
Same founder and the same team. musette.bike is our bike shop, rental and café in Almádena, near Luz. Musette Travel designs and runs our private cycling holidays. Both are operated by Algarve Cycling Hub, Lda, RNAVT 12588, RNAAT 804/2016.
