ABOUT MUSETTE

Born in Flanders. Built for the coast.

Musette Travel organises private, guided and self-guided cycling holidays in Portugal's West Algarve, Costa Vicentina and Alentejo, for groups from six riders. It is founder-led by Jerom Pannier, a Belgian who first came to the West Algarve in 1999 and has built cycling trips here since 2010. Our trips run out of Musette, our own cycling café, workshop and rental fleet in Almádena, between Lagos and Sagres.

THE STORY

Jerom Pannier, founder

Jerom grew up between Ghent and Antwerp, in the part of Belgium where the Tour of Flanders is decided, where cycling is less a hobby than a baseline. Born in May 1981, he went to sports school at twelve and never really left the subject: a master's in sports science at the VUB in Brussels, and a snowboarding career that made him Belgian champion for years and took him around the world with the national team.

Surfing was always the first love. The plan, from childhood, was simple: live somewhere you can be outside every day and surf the coastline. That place turned out to be the western Algarve, first visited in 1999.

Sports tourism runs in the family. At sixteen he was already organising surf and snowboard camps for other people. In 2010 he brought that instinct to cycling, and became one of the pioneers of cycling tourism in this corner of Portugal: routes ridden since 2010, hotels, kitchens and support vans, learned one trip at a time.

Musette followed: a café, a workshop, a shop and a fleet of bikes in Almádena, opened in 2015.

Musette Travel is the distilled version of all of that: the trips he would design for his own friends, run for private groups who expect things to be right.

ALMÁDENA · NEAR LUZ

Where it all starts

Every trip starts where our days start: at Musette in Almádena, near Luz: a cycling café, a full workshop and a fleet of road, gravel, mountain and e-bikes that we renew regularly. Riders come in for a coffee, a Belgian waffle or a cold Kwaremont after the ride; our guides and mechanics work from the same courtyard. It is why our holidays run on local knowledge rather than a map: our guides ride these roads all year.

THE NAME

A musette is the cotton feed bag handed up to riders during a race: food, generosity, the moment someone looks after you on the road. That is the job.

SERVICE

What we mean by service

We don't sell kilometres. We sell the week you'll still be talking about in five years, and the confidence that when something happens on the road, it's already being handled. Hotels with character, chosen one by one. A bike fitted before you land. A guide and a support vehicle on every ride. Lunch and dinner chosen by who cooks, not by who has an English menu.

Don't expect a perfect trip. No honest operator can promise that. Expect that when something happens, we have already started fixing it.

HOW WE WORK

Local before convenient.

The bakery beats the buffet. The place where the chef owns the kitchen beats the one with the sign.

Honesty in the brochure.

If day three has a headwind, we say so. If an e-bike would make your week better, we suggest it.

Guests leave as friends.

We ride with you, eat with you and know how you take your coffee by day two.
